Octahedrite, Medium, IIIA

10,000 years ago, long before the Inuit inhabited Northwest Greenland,
a tremendous explosion occurred over the snow swept wilds and the
largest meteorite shower with recoverable specimens, ever, occurred.
Seventy-five tons of Cape York material has thus far been recovered,
including what is now the largest meteorite in captivity. At 31 tons,
the meteorite named Ahnighito or "The Tent" is the centerpiece of the
Ross Meteorite Hall at the American Museum of Natural History in New
York. This meteorite is so massive that it had to be positioned before
construction commenced on the museum extension which houses it; and the
armature which supports it extends through the floor, beneath the
building, and is anchored directly into Manhattanâ„–s bedrock. The Cape
York meteorites, for centuries, were the sole source of iron with which
local Inuit made knives and other weapons. The existence of this
particular tribe was unknown to Europeans until 1818 when explorer
Captain John Ross, in search of the Northwest Passage, became icebound.
His ship was visited by natives with whom the British officers traded
tusks, as well as knives & harpoons made from meteorite irons. Much
later, expeditions were launched to discover the source of this iron,
and it was this same Inuit group which lead Admiral Peary to their
"iron mountain" in 1894. After several further expeditions to the site,
Peary brought "The Tent" as well as other specimens to New York with a
great deal of fanfare three years later.
